Swatch and Blancpain launch the Green Abyss, a tribute to the iconic Fifty Fathoms

Get ready to dive into the deep end of contemporary watchmaking. Swatch and Blancpain have announced the global launch of the Green Abyss, the new piece in their acclaimed Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms collection, an edition honouring the iconic 1953 Fifty Fathoms, the first true dive watch in history.

This watch, which looks as though it came straight out of the ocean deep, blends deep greens with sandy beige and intense black, evoking the most mysterious ecosystems of the sea. Its case is made of Bioceramic, an innovative material derived from castor oil that brings not only strength but a uniquely soft feel.

The Green Abyss is not merely an accessory, it is a tool for exploration. Its black dial with greenish tones includes a water contact sensor, a detail much valued by collectors. That function, introduced by Blancpain in 1954 for watches destined for diving clubs and military units, makes it possible to check whether the watch has been exposed to moisture, showing a visible colour change at six o'clock.

And of course, as a proper descendant of the Fifty Fathoms, the Green Abyss does not mess about: water resistance to 91 metres, antimagnetic protection, a safety rotating bezel, exceptional legibility and a mechanical movement. All inside an aesthetic that shouts vintage with attitude.

At its heart beats Swatch's SISTEM51 movement, made in Switzerland through an almost fully automated process. Just 51 components organised in five pre assembled modules, with a single central screw. Antimagnetic thanks to a Nivachron hairspring and with a 90 hour power reserve, it is efficiency from another planet.

On the back of the watch, a nod to marine art: a digital print of Felimare picta, also known as the goddess of the sea. Because yes, even the invisible details tell a story.

The Green Abyss carries the retro Blancpain logo and that of its collaboration with Swatch on both the dial and the crown. Its two piece NATO strap is made from recycled fishing nets, sustainability duly noted, and its case profile echoes the original Fifty Fathoms silhouette. As if that were not enough, phrases such as "PASSION FOR DIVING", "PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE" and "IMMERSE YOURSELF" are engraved on the back to remind you that every dive is an act of love for the ocean.

The Green Abyss (reference SO35G100) will be available from 7 June 2025, exclusively in selected Swatch stores around the world. And as with everything worth having, there is a golden rule: one per person, per store, per day.
