The Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection shows us the Earth from space

Three new Bioceramic MoonSwatch watches have just landed on Earth. Throughout history, humans have wondered thousands of times what the world looks like from above. So much so that astronauts who have travelled to space have come back saying the Blue Planet is the most beautiful sight they saw from there. "When I was on the Moon and looked at the Earth for the first time, I wept," said astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American to go into space, in 1961, and the fifth man to walk on the Moon, in 1971.

The three new non limited Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth models, Lava, Polar Lights and Desert, pay tribute to our magnificent planet and take their inspiration from three natural phenomena whose magical, fascinating beauty can be seen clearly from space: volcanic lava, the northern lights and the deserts. For these watches, Swatch has developed three entirely new Bioceramic colours.

The Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Lava draws on volcanoes, openings in the Earth's crust through which ash, gas and lava emerge, a magma of intense reds and oranges as dangerous as it is captivating. Today around 1,670 volcanoes worldwide remain active, of which some sixty erupt each year, and that is without counting undersea volcanoes. The Lava model nods to OMEGA and its 1968 Speedmaster Moonwatch Ultraman, borrowing its famous orange chronograph seconds hand.

Second, the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Polar Lights honours the extraordinary phenomenon of the aurora borealis. Visible from space and of extraordinary beauty, these luminous atmospheric sheets tend to tint the night sky green and blue. Turquoise dominates this watch, a shade recalling the prodigious display of colour in the sky seen at the North Pole. The blue dial of this model is scattered with tiny "stars", minute silver flecks inspired by the aventurine glass dials also found on other OMEGA watches. The arrangement of the stars is different on each model, which makes every dial unique. The numerals and indices on the three subdials use a radial format, as on the Speedmaster of OMEGA's Alaska II and III projects.

Lastly, the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Desert combines the sand colour of its case and hands with the greige of its dial and strap, a shade meant to evoke the vast expanses of sand covering more than a fifth of the Earth's land mass and common on every continent. Of all the deserts, the Sahara is the largest in the world, with a surface of more than 9 million square kilometres stretching across northern Africa. Its climate is extremely dry and can reach temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius by day and below freezing at night.

These three new Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth models also include a motivational phrase on the back of the case, as well as the OMEGA X SWATCH logos on the dial and crown. They carry an image of planet Earth on the battery cover. Their adjustable VELCRO strap is designed to be easy to handle in a spacesuit and adds a final touch of cosmonaut glamour thanks to stitching matching the colour of each watch case.

The hands and indices in this collection are coated with grade A Super-LumiNova and glow precisely in the dark. Every feature of the original OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch, the first watch to travel to the Moon, is repeated in these watches: the asymmetric case, the celebrated tachymeter scale with the dot over the 90 and the subdials typical of the Speedmaster. As with every other Bioceramic MoonSwatch, these new watches include a chronograph function.

Finally, like their counterparts in the OMEGA X Swatch collection, the Lava, Polar Lights and Desert models are made with Bioceramic, a material patented by Swatch obtained by blending two thirds ceramic, used in high end watchmaking, with one third material of biological origin extracted from castor oil.

The three new Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission on Earth watches go on sale from Saturday 15 June in selected Swatch stores only. As with the rest of the Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection, only one watch may be bought per person, per day, per store.
